PG 70: Is Trump Toast?, Russian Hacking, VP Debate, Israeli Settlements

This week, Mike and Jay start by talking about the fallout from a video of Donald Trump saying some extremely vulgar and objectifying things about women. The Guys agree that it’s awfully hard to see how Trump can recover from this. After that, they discuss potential Russian hacking of the U.S. election system, the suddenly not very important-seeming Vice Presidential debate (not that VP debates are ever all that important), and Israel announcing new settlements – over U.S. objections – only weeks after the U.S. signed a massive military aid agreement with Israel.

  1. I’m a liberal Democrat, fairly new to the show (3 months or so, catch most of your episodes) and I want to direct most of this to Jay: Even before today’s (10/9) episode, I was impressed with your even-handed analysis. I disagreed with many of your points, but I’ve always thought they were thoughtful and logical, with no attempt to twist the narrative. (I feel the same way about Mike, but that’s easy to say when you agree with someone nearly all the time.)

Onto Jay’s response to the Hot Mic catastrophe: Just wanted to give you a round of applause. While noting that the video hardly reveals an unknown side of Trump (of course you’re right), you made no effort to spin the story in any of the myriad ways we’ve already seen from Trump apologists – it’s common guy talk, Hillary the enabler is just as/nearly as bad, Bill was worse, it was 11 years ago, he thought he was talking in private, it’s a distraction from the real issues like immigration, etc. In fact, you pointed out a nuance many have missed, that this goes beyond crude talk and ventures in the realm of sexual assault (if Trump actually did what he claimed).

Jay, you already had a track record that makes me trust your opinions. When you say something I disagree with, my response is to re-examine why I disagree, try on your opinion and take it for a test drive – and sometimes change my mind. You didn’t need to convince me further that you were a voice I could trust, but your comments on today’s show did just that.

  2. Jay,

Your defense of Israel is lacking. Israel did NOT gain most of their territory due to defense wars. The initiated both wars in which they gained most of what is Israel today.

    1. I thought Jay’s defense of Israel was great and he really did expose liberal hypocrisy when he highlighted the difference between how American liberals have reacted to illegal Mexican immigration and how they have responded to illegal Israeli immigration. Instead of lecturing Israel they really ought to suggest that the Palestinian government offer the sort of AMNESTY to illegal Israeli immigrants that they are so eager for us to offer to illegal Mexican immigrants. If illegal immigration is so great, why don’t they encourage the Palestinian government to offer illegal Israeli immigrants the opportunity to obtain Palestinian citizenship so long as they have a clean criminal record, pay any applicable fines, fees and Palestinian taxes and give an oath that they support the Palestinian constitution and, if called upon, will fight to protect Palestine from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

      1. I’m wondering how similar these situations are. The United States is a large and powerful country that can absorb quite a bit of immigration of all sorts. Palestine is a small, poor, and beleaguered territory which is, according to the international community, being illegally occupied. – Mike

        1. But as Jay so ably pointed out, Mexican’s who have taken up occupancy in the U.S. without the proper immigration papers are illegally occupying the United States. And as Donald Trump points out all the time, the United States might not be small, but its is a poor and beleaguered territory, just a frog’s hair away from utter dissolution.
