PG38: GOP Elites vs Trump & Cruz, Iran Prisoner Swap, Bernie Ascendent, The Water in Flint

This week, The Politics Guys start off by examining the choice GOP elites are making between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. Neither of the two Republican frontrunners is loved (or even liked) by the party establishment, so it’s definitely a ‘pick your poison’ situation. Mike and Jay get into the why some Republicans are holding their noses and going with Trump, while others are very reluctantly supporting Cruz. Next, it’s a discussion of whether or not the US should negotiate with terrorists, or terrorism-sponsoring states, to bring home American prisoners. After that it’s back to domestic politics, where the Guys look at the reasons behind Bernie Sanders’ rise, and how Hillary Clinton and the media are reacting to it. Finally, Mike and Jay discuss what happened to the water in Flint, Michigan, and who’s to blame.

  1. I just listened to the latest podcast and am very troubled by both of your characterizations of the situation in Flint. There were key parts of this story that were left out such as the City Manager was told when he initially wanted to switch water sources that measures would be require to mitigate the corrosive nature of the Flint River water that was ignored. In addition, the City Council tried to get the water switched back to Detroit water and that request was ignored due to the fact that when an emergency city manager is in place, there is no room for democracy! In addition, Jay’s portrayal of Flint as a city that could not govern itself might have some validity, but when neither of you mention the problems that preceded this- closure of GM plants, White Flight, reduced tax base with higher needs- really diminishes your argument. I think the worst thing that was ignored in your overview of this subject, though, is the complete lack of mentioning of the long term effects this lead poisoning will have on this community, further disadvantaging its population. These people need to be compensated!! Some possibly for the rest of their lives for this injustice!!!!!

    1. Thanks for your comment. I agree that there is a lot more to the story than we discussed in that episode (also, sorry for taking so long to approve your comment and reply – I’m still not the greatest at WordPress stuff, but I’ll keep a closer eye on it in the future). We could most definitely do an entire show on the problems facing Flint (and the many cities like Flint) which, as you point out, has had many problems that preceded the current crisis. I’m trying to think of a way we can turn this into a somewhat focused ‘Ask The Politics Guys’ question, but so far I’m coming up empty. If you have any ideas along those lines, definitely let me know. (Though given my shameful performance in responding to your comment, until I figure out the WordPress thing better, you might want to reach us at politicsguys@gmail.com or by messaging us at our Facebook page. – Mike
