PG67: The Polls Tighten, Trump’s Policies, and Some Good Economic News

This week, Mike and Jay start by looking at the tightening polls in the presidential race. While they both think Hillary Clinton will still win, it’s becoming easier and easier to construct realistic scenarios of not just a Trump presidency, but of a Trump presidency with Republicans in control of both the House and the Senate. After that, they talk about what to expect in the first presidential debate, examine Trump’s  proposals for child care and economic growth, and discuss come surprisingly good economic news. In this week’s listener mail, the Guys discuss whether or not the media is going too easy on Trump and why there haven’t been any female or minority guests on the show to this point.

  1. Guys! First off, I’d like to say I’m a big fan of the show. I think that your balance of center left and center right is something that America needs to see right now. At the age of 30, I feel like I have one foot in the Millennial pool and one foot in Generation X; socially liberal but economically conservative. If I had to put a lable on myself, it might say something like “diet libertatian”.

The point is, in moments of self-reflection when I’m trying to reconcile the need for social programs with balancing the budget, I understand that compromises need to be made. However, it seems that congress’s idea of “compromise” is to eviscerate bills of fundamentally necessary language that one party finds objectionable, resulting in a grotesquery that only Mary Shelly could dream up.

Perhaps I am just too young to remember, but I cannot recall a good bill resulting from bi-partisan effort. Would you please post me in the right direction?

    1. ‘Diet Libertarian’ – I like it! As for good, bipartisan bills, they’ve been awfully thin on the ground in recent years, but if you go back to the pre 9/11 years, there are, if not a bunch, at least more than a few. But that was a very different world.
